Anna Maria McCallion

 So, I had always heard that Josephine lost two old siblings in the NY diphtheria epidemic, but had only seen evidence for Joseph.

But, thanks to Joanne for this about Anna Maria McCallion:

This is a note from Anna/Nanny to her daughter Josephine: 
"Jo. This is your Dearest only(?) sister of yours' hair that I have kept for you and the blue beads & ring & sacred heart"



"Hair of my darling girl Anna Maria McCallion who died July 2 1922 age 8 1/2 years.

Never ever will I forget you dearest girl. May God have mercy on you and comfort me. 

Your heartbroken mother"

Intended address is: "Brother J. McCallion. 142 W 67 St. NewYork."


This is the same address used by Anna McBride McCallion. She arrives one week later, April 23, 1911.

He is from Teironeill (Tironeill) Strabane, she is from Dooish, Ballybofey.

His father James McCallion, hers is James McBride.

This looked like the birth of Annie/Anna:

Born May 6 1876. Father James McBride of Dooish, mother Anne McBride, formerly Meehan.

But this Anne dies, age 9 months:


Our Anne, born Nov 5th, 1879:

James McBride dies,  Jan 13, 1917:

Anne McBride McCallion emigrates April 23, 1911 with her two children, James, age two, and Joseph, age 10 months:


Her father listed as James McBride, Ballybofey, Donegal.

Note: names were crossed off like this when immigrants were retained at Ellis Island, likely due to health. They were allowed entry two weeks later.

Note: her age listed as 27, actually 32.

Her intended address in US: "Husband (?) James McCallion. 142 W 67 Street, New York"


This is James's birth cert, 1908:

Note: the family is living in Lifford, which is right outside Strabane (now across the border). Registration district for this search was Strabane.

Joseph's birth cert, 1910:

Note: the family is now living 8 Argyle Terrace, Derry Urban #2, County Derry. Have they moved to Derry/Londonderry to make the trip to the US? Why is Anne back home with McCallions for 1911 census?

Registration district for the search is Londonderry.
This is the Joseph who dies 1920s in NYC of diphtheria.


Given how much James & Anne move around above, perhaps this is him after all (August 21st, 1910):


It lists his last home as Clonmany, which is way up north Donegal. But perhaps they moved there?

This is the kicker:

His address/contact in the US will be: "Bro. in law Chas McBride. 132 West 63rd St. New York"
