Meyler/McCallion

Grandfather (Pop) James McCallion's sister Anne marries William Meyler. This is a pic of them (from ancestry.com):

From Stephen Meyler, William and Anne's grandson:

"Your grandfather [James] sponsored my father when he immigrated to the U.S. back in 1949. I believe they [William and Anne] met in Derry when William was working in the shipyard. He was from Wexford so they settled in Wexford. Annie's sister, Mary McCallion, was a nurse in Derry. There was a brother on the family farm in Ballindrait, County Donegal, but his given name escapes me now. My father, Stephen Meyler, was born in 1923. He spent his summers in Ballindrait. William was a merchant seaman most of his life. Ships he served on were torpedoed by the Germans both in WWI and WWII. He survived both sinkings. He emigrated to the U.S. in 1949.  He stayed with his Uncle James until he got settled."

William,  US entry, 1949:

Destination in US? Nicholas Ave!

He doesn't stay long:

Here is William's son Stephen's Ellis Island record (1951):

McNeills

I remember the three McNeill sisters, Mollie, Annie and Bridie. I think we visited them in Donegal, and if I recall correctly they came to the US too? Or maybe just visited us at the Continental?

Anyway, these three were the daughters of Anna McBride's sister Katherine. She married George McNeill. George and Katherine had 5 children, the other two were Alexander (who marries Maude Kelly) and Celine, who marries Hugh McColgan.

Alexander and Maude have four children: George, Eugene, Ann and Mary (in order of age) [thanks Derek for correction].  George's son Derek is on ancestry.com! He lives in Scotland, but grew up in Dooish.

Derek says he may have a photo of the original house in Dooish, possibly the place Anna grew up in. Looking forward to seeing that!

Here's Derek's pic from ancestry:

Also, below pic from Joanne (I think Martin sent too) showing Annie & Molly's trip to the US, late 1950s:

Back row: Henry O’Grady, Annie McNeill, George McCallion, Eddie McCallion, Molly McNeill, and Charles/Chick McCallion.
Middle row: James/Jimmy McCallion, his wife, Anna O’Rourke McCallion, Josephine, Mary Patricia McCallion (married to George), Jean Weismann McCallion (married to Eddie), Irene (married to Charles/Chick).
Front: Henry and Josephine's children: Martin, Joanne, Katherine, Henry

CMT

Time to gather some info on CMT:

https://www.mda.org/disease/charcot-marie-tooth

https://www.cmtausa.org/

Joanne mentioned the actual type is PMP22. More on that here:

https://cmtrf.org/what-is-cmt-disease/types-of-cmt/cmt1/what-is-cmt1a/

also, of interest:

https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/17499-spinal-stenosis

I tend to think of this as a McCallion thing, but perhaps it is more of a McBride thing?

I asked Fran, granddaughter of James's brother Michael, if there was evidence of CMT in that branch. Fran replied, she has not heard of CMT. So, no evidence in that branch of the family, nor is she aware of any in the McCallions that remained in Donegal.

Need to verify about the other McCallion's still in Donegal; perhaps Katherine knows.

James' siblings:

John - stays in Donegal

Patrick - stays Donegal

Michael - comes to US, dies age 30, no CMT in offspring

Daniel - comes to US, dies as a young man (?)

William - stays Donegal

(Mary) Anne - stays Donegal, marries Meyler, Fran is in touch with them

Sarah - stays Donegal

Anna McBride's siblings:

John - comes to US, Franklin Lakes NJ

Charles - comes to US, we know all his kids ... any signs?

Mary Ellen (Nellie) - stays Donegal, marries Dowds

Kathleen - stays Donegal, marries McNeil (Bridie, Molly, etc)

Margaret - stays Donegal, marries Murphy, offspring include McAvincheys

Susan - stays Donegal, marries McNulty, dies young (1918)

family picture

 Thanks John for this pic!

Caption: "This is a very old picture. The Casey girls told me to give it to you. I suppose you have some like it."

Anna McBride McCallion in right rear, Anna Marie McCallion in right front. That looks like Chick to the right of the driver. I always thought the driver was Joseph, but the boy to the right of Chick, behind Anna, looks more like Joseph from the confirmation picture. Are the rest the Casey family?

Joseph and Anna McCallion, RIP 1922

John found that user 'hgs205' had posted updates on the graves of Joseph and Anna McCallion on the findagrave.com site. I wrote to them, and they said the found the info on the familysearch.org site.

So, sure enough:

Anna dies July 1, Joseph dies July 2. Both are buried July 4, 1922.

John McBride (brother of Anna and Charles)

1910 US census, Wooster St, New Haven, CT:

So, John emigrates in 1900, BEFORE Charles and Anna. John's industry is 'life insurance'. Note all the lodgers in same house.

1920 US census, Chapel St, New Haven, CT:

Oldest, John, is born in Ireland. Anna and Rita born in Connecticut (he emigrates after his parents?). John's industry is 'shipping clerk'.

1930 US census, Bishop St, New Haven, CT:

Even though both born in Donegal, it is marked as Northern Ireland.

Mom's research on McCallions she found in NJ. She determined they were not related, however John found this link which may refute that:
