John McBride of Dooish

We know from Griffith's Eval that there are two John McBrides in Dooish in 1850s, one on the land that now belongs to the McNeils.

We also know that John McBride & Ellen Harron are Anna McBride McCallion's grandparents.

But which John is which?

One John dies 1876 (Registration District is Stranolar):

Age 81 would put his birth year in 1795.

The other John dies 1883:

"Mac Cailin - A Martial Clan"

Sister Maire had this in her collection of documents on the McCallion family.

It appears this article was published in "Donegal Annual 1981", which is published by "County Donegal Historical Society"

 https://donegalhistory.ie/donegal-annual-1981/

If there was a link to the article I would use that. Instead posting images here.

Note the references to the 1608 rebellion is to O'Doherty's Rebellion:

References to Inis Eoghain is the current Inishowen peninsula.

Based on bottom of page 5, the town of RedCastle was the home of the original fort for Cathar Mhic Ailin ... sounds like it is time for a road trip! Paul? John? Kath?

Billy McCallion, 1952-2022

In honor of Billy McCallion, his family held a celebration of his life in NYC on January 6th. I know his  nieces Lauren and Jennifer were a big part of organizing this, as well as his siblings, Michael and Beth (and perhaps more, there were a lot of McCallions!). It was great to see the many people who Billy knew and loved, both friends and family.

From Beth's collection:
Eddie McCallion and Jean Woison McCallion with Beth and Billy at her graduation.

From the McCallion re-union: Michael (far left), Aunt Jean, Billy, Bea, Cindy & Charlie McCallion (please correct me if I'm wrong!)

Woisin family

Edward McCallion married Jean Woisin. Here's more on her family

1940 US Census, West 104th St, Manhattan:

Line 29 is Jean's father Gustave who was born in Germany and is a chauffeur.
Aunt Jean is like line 33 and she works as a clerk in a department store.

Because Gustave landed on line  #29, we get supplemental questions:

So both his parents were born in Germany (as he was), and he is part of Social Security.

1930 US Census, Columbus Ave:

So. both of Jean's mother's (Julia) parents were born in Germany too. Julia herself was born in NJ.

Dooish & Griffiths

Based on the location of the McNeil's home, we can tell the location of the original McBride plot from the 1840s in Griffiths.

There are two John McBrides in Dooish in Griffith's Evaluation, one in plot 10A & B to the left and one in plot #2, to the right (Dooish is a big townland, this is only the northern part):

So the McNeil plot is #2, and likely that was John McBride's too (and birthplace/home for Anna McBride McCallion).

If I had realized I likely would have spent hours crawling the fields, especially down by the river!

Note that someone probably knew this, and just didn't realize that I didn't know!
